Ages 9–11: Build your foundations
Eyes-up dribbling, pivoting, layups on both sides and helping teammates. Rotate roles regardless of height.
An educational adaptation. Sets, duration and sequence are editorial suggestions informed by the cited sources, not an individual prescription or a named coach’s exact programme. A coach adjusts for experience, maturity and total load.
Practice rhythm
Example: 2 × 60 min weekly. Coordinate with club practice; this programme replaces sessions rather than automatically adding to them.
Example session
- 8 min games and warm-up
- 8 min both-hand dribbling
- 8 min stops and pivots
- 9 min layups
- 7 min passing
- 15 min 3-on-3
- 5 min cooldown
Nutrition at this age
School-day example: oats with milk; rice, beans and vegetables for lunch; fruit before practice; eggs and bread at dinner. Adjust portions for appetite, growth and allergies.
Meal examples and what to avoidMental task
Choose one goal: “I will get open for a pass.” Afterwards name one thing learned, beyond baskets scored.
Signs of readiness for the next step
Tries both hands in games, spots an open teammate and controls the stop.
If you are an older beginner, start with basic drills regardless of the age label. Progress depends on movement quality and confidence, with your coach.
