Ages 6–8: Fall in love with the game
Running, catching, balance and both hands. Everyone explores every role.
An educational adaptation. Sets, duration and sequence are editorial suggestions informed by the cited sources, not an individual prescription or a named coach’s exact programme. A coach adjusts for experience, maturity and total load.
Practice rhythm
Starting example: 1 × 35–45 min organised basketball weekly; otherwise free play. For six-year-olds and absolute beginners, start shorter according to attention and readiness.
Example session
- 5 min tag and movement
- 6 min traffic-light dribbling
- 7 min partner passing
- 8 min close-range shooting
- 10 min 2-on-2 with frequent rotations
- 4 min cooldown and conversation
Nutrition at this age
A parent arranges regular meals. Before play: banana and yoghurt if tolerated; afterwards a normal meal. Water is available during breaks.
Meal examples and what to avoidMental task
Ask: “What was fun today?” Notice effort, cooperation and asking for help. The child may take a break.
Signs of readiness for the next step
Follows a simple cue, catches an appropriate ball and wants to play again. This is not a selection test.
If you are an older beginner, start with basic drills regardless of the age label. Progress depends on movement quality and confidence, with your coach.
